City of Risk

Transcript

Welcome to the City of Risk. A new day dawns, and with it comes new opportunities to identify and manage risk.

As you explore the city, you'll learn to recognize the real world risks that can impact the communities we work and live in.

Food processing factories like this one cannot afford property loss or even a slowdown in production due to earthquakes, flooding, or equipment failure.

The food that's stored in this warehouse was produced in a factory.

Warehouses like this one provide a centralized location for storage, making it easier to ship goods throughout the world.

But without proper safeguards, inventory and equipment can be damaged by wind, flooding, earthquakes, and fire.

The people who live and work in this city need healthcare.

And so facilities like this community hospital must always be thinking about the storms on the horizon and the wind and flooding that may come with them. Factories, warehouses, hospitals, they all need power.

And this power plant provides energy to the whole city. This critical service must minimize the risk of fire, explosions, and operator error. Even a cyber attack can disrupt the entire facility.

The world is looking to balance its energy generation with renewable sources like wind.

But they also carry surprising risks from natural hazards like high winds, snow, and ice. Or mechanical risks leading to fire.

Strong winds can even overpower the turbine and lead to structural collapse.

We designed this city to train consulting engineers to identify the hazards that exist in a wide range of facilities.

Their first site visits happen right here in this room as engineers gather around these models and leverage the knowledge they've gained from our research campus to evaluate each property and discuss potential risk. We chose a city for this training because risks are interconnected. In a city, it's not just individual facilities at risk, it's the community as a whole.

Ultimately, the resilience you build into your city reflects the resilience in your community. And that's what this training is all about. Working for a more resilient tomorrow.
